Sioux Falls mile 5.5 Half Marathon
Approaching mile 6 and Happy to see Family!

You’ve heard the term Deja Vu right??  You know that feeling you have already experienced something that is happening all over again.

One year ago my husband and I had planned our anniversary weekend in Sioux Falls, SD which included a run.  You see, I really do enjoy being a traveling runner!  And the best part about going to Sioux Falls is my brother and sister-in-law live there and we all have a blast when we’re together.

Unfortunately a few days prior to our departure,  I came down with a virus and was in and out of bed most of the week with a fever, headache & body aches.  I wasn’t 100% on race day and I had a slight fever, but my niece and nephew drove for hundreds of miles to watch me run, so I wasn’t about to let them down.  It wasn’t 26.2, but it was 13.1 in 1 hour and 50 minutes, which was a respectable time considering how I felt…rotten.

I was surprised to learn the next morning I finished 2nd in my age group out of about 30 runners or so.  Truth is, once you reach the fifty age bracket, the number of runners drop significantly.  To be honest, I am BLESSED I can still run with no injuries!!  I am no olympic athlete but I do LOVE TO RUN!

Fast forward one year.  Deja Vu…..woke up on Thursday the week of the race with a very sore throat which turned into a bad cold.  UGH!  I couldn’t believe it.  Same thing…..I rested, babied myself the best way a busy wife, homemarker, and business owner can.  I loaded up on extra C’s, Zinc, took Epsom salt bathes, got a massage, and most importantly,  I said a few prayers.  Actually more than a few.  Not sure if God heard me but I sure was doing my best to make sure he did.

You’d think by the looks of our vehicle, we were staying a week vs a night.

Race day morning it was bit chilly and I was not feeling 100% as you can see here.  Smiling but looking a bit pasty and thinking, “how the heck am I going to do this?”.

But I wasn’t about to let my family down so BOOM…. gun when off and so did I.

The best part of the race was seeing my family along the course.  They made me smile and hearing them as I approached the finish line made it all worth it once again.

I didn’t finish as I had hoped but to be honest I didn’t have high expectations due to my cold.  This year I finished a couple minutes behind last years time and 3rd out of about 35 runners in my age group.

So the good news is, I am still finishing high in my age group even when I am a bit under the weather.  Next year, lets pray there is not another case of DeJa Vu!

  1. […] The Sioux Falls half marathon is not only a beautiful course, but it’s where my brother lives so having family along the course is extra special.  It was my second time running here, finishing 1:50 last year and 1:52 this year.  You can read more about it here. […]
