A Journey of Unexpected Triumph: My 8K Race in New Zealand

As I sit down to recount my recent experiences in New Zealand, I find myself reflecting on more than just the stunning landscapes and warm hospitality.

Instead of running a half marathon as planned in New Zealand, I made my coach proud and bumped down to an 8K. It was definitely a profound test of resilience and determination and totally unexpected journey but left an unforgettable impression on my mind.

Most often, for me, it’s about the work you put in to get to the start line. Even though I was under the weather, I was fit and strong enough to run. Arriving at the starting line is the culmination of consistent hard work; crossing the finish line becomes the rewarding cherry on top of that dedication.

Only 200 meters to go

Leading up to the race, my training had been nothing short of excellent. Despite encountering the virus just a month before my departure, I managed to maintain a strong regimen, missing only a few runs. The anticipation of the 13.1-mile journey ahead was tangible, fueled by weeks of dedicated preparation.

My last mile was 7:47 pace ~ I was gassed!

However, fate had other plans in store for me. Upon arriving in New Zealand, after just three easy days of running, a tickle in my throat quickly escalated into a full-blown illness by Thursday. By Friday, swallowing became a challenge, and the reality set in—I was not well enough to run the intended distance. Devastation washed over me, and tears flowed as I wrestled with the sudden shift in my plans.

Looking for my husband….Finished ~ I am Hot and TIRED!

Yet, amidst the disappointment, I began to ponder the real reason I was in New Zealand. I reminded myself that I was not merely a runner but here in New Zealand to attend a dear friend’s wedding. Running the race was a bonus since it was so close to the wedding venue. With this newfound clarity, I embraced the uncertainty and resolved to make the most of whatever lay ahead.

Here I go!

After making the decision to run, we embarked on a nearly 2-hour drive to the start line, having risen at 3:15. Throughout the journey, I sipped on my Shaklee electrolytes and had a meal bar. Upon arrival, I replenished with water, prepared my workout drink, grabbed my energy chew, and consumed a Ucan gel 30 minutes before the start.

And then, I was off…

Though not the distance I had trained for, I showed up at the starting line with a strong sense of determination and excitement within me. With each stride, I somehow found the strength to push past the pain you feel when you are running at race pace. It HURTS! As the miles unfolded, it did get harder, but it helped to be running in such breathtaking scenery of New Zealand and the camaraderie of fellow runners was amazing.

As I approached the final stretch, an unexpected surge of energy propelled me forward. My legs, though heavy with exhaustion, managed to find the strength to push through. Despite my chest beating hard, something deep within me urged me forward. Surprisingly, I discovered reserves of energy I didn’t know I had, propelling me to finish the final mile at a surprising sub 8-minute pace—7:47 to be precise. The finish line beckoned, and with every ounce of determination, I crossed it, which turns out was fast enough for second place among 14 women in my age group. I could not believe I ran that fast! My coach on the other hand always tells me you are stronger than you think. THANKS coach MK!

Exhausted yet exhilarated, I collapsed to my knees, the weight of the moment washing over me. To be honest, I could barely breath! Emotions surged—a blend of pride, gratitude, and awe at the journey I had undertaken. In that moment, amidst the backdrop of New Zealand’s natural splendor, I found solace and strength, knowing that even in the face of adversity, I showed up and finished strong.

Reflecting on this memorable experience, I’m reminded of how resilient we can be and the strength of determination. Despite the obstacles we face along the way, every step takes us nearer to our dreams. I have no idea what is next in my racing journey but what I do know, I am eager to find out —a testament to the enduring power of the human spirit and the unyielding beauty of the journey itself.

I did it and in spite of the pain…I am dreaming of what is next.😜

I LOVE BEING A TRAVELING RUNNER!
